A5 landscape card, Invitation to the launch celebration of By the Rivers of Birminam, a retrospective exhibition by Jamaica-born, Birmingham-based photographer, Vanley Burke. The exhibition, curated by Lynda Morrris, was held at mac (Midlanda Arts Centre), Birmingham, 22 September - 18 November 2012.

From the Invitation to the launch celebration:

Vanley Burke’s work represents probably the greatest  photographic document of the Caribbean diaspora in post-war Britain, detailing the experience of Black people in the UK and their community identity. He has dedicated the past 45 years to recording the lives of ‘British Caribbean’ people of Handsworth. In his own words: “The photographs are very much a part of a documentation process which we as Black people need to go through… It is not an attempt to show the Black community to the wider community. This is where we are. It is more importantly a record.” By the Rivers of Birminam brings together 100 photographs from 1968 to 2011…

The card featured details of the venue, opening times, etc. The image on the card was one of Burke’s most striking and memorable images, of a multitude of people gathered for African Liberation Day, Handsworth Park, 1977.
