Alejandra Riera with Doina Petrescu

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Romania, date unknown

From the archived Documenta 11 website : www.documenta12.de//archiv/d11/data/english/index.html

“Language - as that medium always forced to present itself as a meta medium, containing all past and future media - is explored in Alejandra Riera’s semiologically oriented practice refuting the presumption that writing can speak for other media, or in other words, that art can be read as text. Riera draws from her own private archive of media imagery, diligently researched and self-made, tying together a wide range of photographic imagery from politics, philosophy, art and architecture, with their extended captions, attempting to simultaneously construct and deconstruct elaborate orders of signification. Riera playfully doses the withdrawal and the making available of information, insisting on the dialogical relationship between text and image.”
