“Since the late 1970s, Raymond Pettibon has been pursuing a strategy of radical reversals by combining and collapsing the field of visual representation with that of language. Working primarily in pen and ink, graphite, or a combination of watercolor and crayon, Pettibon produces drawings that are inseparable from the textual citations inscribed within them. The chaotic combination of past and present, achieved by juxtaposing everyday language with literary references, subculture and high culture, mass production and artisanal fabrication, is heightened by Pettibon’s labyrinthine mode of display. Pettibon presents hundreds of variously sized drawings placed next to or on top of each other on an entire wall, constructing a single installation that exceeds the identity of any individual text or image. In the newly constituted medium that emerges from this maelstrom, Pettibon constructs a site of resistance to capitalist systems of power and control and their homogenizing tendencies by producing a form that never becomes fully stable but remains open to infinite experiences, identities and utterances.”
