“Since the beginning of the 1990s, Manfred Pernice has been working on his open sculptural vocabulary, which is marked by modern packaging, transport tools, and architectural references. One of Pernice’s primary modules is the ‘can’ - a container representing the undefined content of the most widespread basic element of the modern packaging industry. Pernice metaphorically describes the increasing segmentation, organization, packaging, and mobilization of goods and spaces as “canning the world,” often including in his description the unimaginative modern mass architecture of, for example, office buildings, shopping malls, and government centers. To develop his sculptures and installations, Pernice first makes drawings and small cardboard and wooden models, which function as three-dimensional sketches, yet also have their own objecthood. The works are made of simple materials such as particle board, raw wooden slats, and cardboard. Individual elements and titles of works often refer to specific places or situations, without, however, having any direct relationship to the reference.”
