“Kutlug Ataman is an artist and filmmaker who works in documentary and fiction. His feature film Lola + Billyddikid (1998) was the first independent Turkish film to deal openly with homosexuality while his art videos represent a subversion of the video documentary format, not only through the mode of installation, but also through choice of subject matter and length. In his almost 8 hour interview of 87-year old Turkish diva Semiha Berksoy, Kutlug Ataman’s Semiha B Unplugged (1997), fantasy and reality are confused both for Berksoy and for the viewer.”
Along with Jeremy Deller, Langlands & Bell, and Yinka Shonibare, Kutlug Ataman was shortlisted for the Turner Prize 2004. The award was, in due course, made to Jeremy Deller. Ataman was shortlisted for “his poignant and incisive video installations which describe the lives of individuals, creating intimate portraits while addressing broader social concerns, as shown at the Istanbul Biennial and other European venues.” (From the introduction to the Turner Prize catalogue, 2004, Tate Publishing, London.
