Born, 1950 in Brussels, Belgium

From the Documenta 11 archive website: www.documenta12.de//archiv/d11/data/english/index.html

”Chantal Akerman’s films in the 1970s and 1980s made a major contribution to the “new women’s cinema” and feminist film theory. Some of Akerman’s early films were made in New York, where she developed a minimalist aesthetic exploring architectural and urban space while amplifying the off-screen space through an evocative quasi-autobiographical voice-over. Recent installation projects have involved a reworking of elements of her feature films. These installations grapple with the need to translate and rearticulate some elements of a pre-existing cinematic work, shifting the focus of her inquiry from feminist issues to the conditions of spectatorship.”
