Anish Kapoor represented Britain at the XLIV Venice Biennale, in the British Pavilion. The exhibition’s dates as given in the catalogue were May - September 1990. From the catalogue, “This is the second time in succession that we have chosen to present the work of a young sculptor at the British Pavilion in Venice. it is also the second time that Anish Kapoor has exhibited at the Biennale, after his striking debut at the 1982 Aperto in the company of other artists to whose work the “New British Sculpture” has been loosely applied.”

Substantial, large and heavy catalogue - with large colour plates throughout - that reflected something of Kapoor’s standing as a British artist of major importance, whose practice had been well recognised over the preceding years, and as an artist for whom further honours lay ahead. The type of heavyweight paper used in the cover of the publication, and the weight of paper used  throughout, managed to echo the organic composition, the sensibilities and the aesthetics of Kapoor’s sculpture itself. Furthermore, the large typesize used throughout the publication, and the spacing of the text, transformed the catalogue into a particularly accessible and readable publication.

Though it was not referenced in this catalogue, Kapoor was the first non British born artist to represent Britain. He had been born in Bombay, India in 1954.
