Title: Turner Prize proves the ordure of the day
Author: Dayla Alberge, Arts Correspondent
Source: The Times,Wednesday 2 December,1998 - front page, p.1
Article is accompanied by a single panel cartoon by the cartoonist, Pugh, of a couple standing in front of a Chrs Ofili painting replete with dung - with the following caption: “It’s amazing how the smell seems to follow you around the room”.
Times art correspondent seems unsure about Chris Ofili winning the Turner Prize the previous evening. Others have been less impressed. Brian Sewell, in the Evening Standard, exclaimed: “I am sick of shit masquerading as art.” David Lee, editor of Art Review, dismissed the use of dung as a gimmick.
