Inside 4 panels and outside back panel contains a text that accompanies the exhibition, from the introduction: “A 19th century Bristolian commentator remarked that “there is not a brick in the city which is not cemented with the blood of a slave.” 1992, the year of the Columbus Quincentenary and the advent of a Single European market, provides an appropriate context for this project which explores various legacies of imperialism in relation to both the specific histories of the three ports and the wider issues of colonial expansion such as the Atlantic Slave Trade, continuing Third World exploitation and the diaspora of Black communities. The commissioned artists have responded innovatively through a range of art forms - from Keith Piper’s video installation Trade Winds to the visual theatre of Bandele Iyapo, and from South Atlantic Souvenir’s range of edible “post-colonial“ Trophies products to Sunil Gupta’s digitised photography.”
