Title: Black Art Gallery: Maud Sulter. Writer: Mark Currah. This text refers to the exhibition, Sphinx
From the article: “…And traces of the slave -trade apparently still litter the island: manacles and chains still turn up in the sand. But Sulter has avoided such images, preferring an implied content. There are no direct references in the pictures to the history that made them, understanding must come from a close examination of an apparently neutral landscape. An attitude that might be used more often, and indicate that rarely if ever is a landscape as innocent as many artists would have us believe.”
