Title: Hands-on therapy for users (on collaboration between professionals and patients)
Author: Sacha Craddock
Review of the group exhibition Care and Control at the Hackney Hospital, 27 June - 5 August 1995
Features an installation photograph of Donald Rodney’s work “Othello“ made in collaboration with Graham Plumb specifically for the exhibition.
The writer opens the article with a description of the curatorial/commissioning group Rear Window, a 5 person organisation who co-ordinate site-specific exhibitions such as Care and Control. From the article: “We invited artists to do site-specific works in the institution… (Peter) Cross says, “ and we said to the users (the correctly prefered term for patients) “Look, this is your place. Rather than working on the table, you can acyually take over the place for three months’ We never wanted to make a sort of dogmatic point, though, about art being therapy or therapy being art.”
