Partha Mitter
Partha Mitter is a scholar, art historian and Emeritus Professor of art history at University of Sussex. He is the author of a number of books, including Much Maligned Monsters. A History of European Reactions to Indian Art (Clarendon Press, 1977); Art and Nationalism in Colonial India, 1850-1922 (Cambridge University Press, 1994); and The Triumph of Modernism: Indian Artists and the Avant-garde 1922-1947 (University of Chicago Press, 2007). Partha Mitter contributed a text, Reflections on Modern Art and National Identity in Colonial India: An Interview, to Cosmopolitan Modernisms, inIVA and MIT Press, 2005. The book was part of Kobena Mercer’s Annotating Art’s Histories series.
Mitter contributed a text - Indian artists and the Raj: Westernisation and nationalism (1850–1947) - to Beyond Frontiers: Contemporary British Art by Artists of South Asian Descent, Saffron Books, 2001. The book described itself as marking “the first attempt to survey the work of contemporary British artists whose ancestral roots lie in the countries and cultures of South Asia. For some, their links with the Subcontinent remain present and immediate; for others, they are a barely perceptible trace, filtered through generations of exile and migration.”
