Born, 1963 in London, England
Franklyn Beckford’s work was included in the From Two Worlds exhibition at Whitechapel Art Gallery, 30 July - 7 September 1986. Beckford also had workn included in Double Vision: An exhibiton of contemporary Afro-Caribbean art, held at Cartwright Hall, Bradford, 8 November 1986 - 4 January 1987. Within the Double Vision poster/brochure, the text on Beckford included “His sculptures are like strange organic accretions. They evoke the smells of tropical dry seasons and seem to belong among the sapless vegetation of a sun-baked landscape. They live as forms in a state of suspended animation and give the uncanny feeling that they will come alive, moving of their own volition at any given moment. The whole is a harmonious integration of ordinary material lifted to the level of aesthetics: ‘I find the integration of material and way of working an important part of my sculpture, which ranges from wood construction to the incorporation into plaster work of rice, beans, coconut, straw and anything else which has played a part in my life.’”
