A book by James Walvin, Making the Black Atlantic, had on its cover a painting by Frank Bowling, Night Journey, acrylic on canvas, 1968-9. Private collection, New York. (The dimensions are not given). Night Journey was one of Bowling’s map paintings and had been reproduced, in monochrome, on one of the opening pages of The Other Story catalogue.
The book itself set out to “present a coherent story of the African exile, of its origins, progress and transformation to freedom, within the broadest context.
