There is no description of the exhibition at Pavilion, Leeds.

Description for the exhibition at The Black Art Gallery, London is as follows: “Sphinxx is the first part of a two part exhibition featuring the work of Afrikan women photographers, and images of the Motherland and the Diaspora. The shows are grouped under the title EYE-SIS. …The images are from an island one mile off the coast of The Gambia, where slaves were held awaiting “loading’ onto the ships to the Americas. The island was the last these people saw of their homeland. The island is now disappearing into the sea. Maud Sulter in using the technology of photography to “capture’ these scenes, raises many questions about the nature and the role of our history and its documentation.’

From a text supplied by The Black Art Gallery: “Sphinx is her first one-woman photographic show and will tour into 1988 as will NEW ROBES FOR MaSHULAN, a joint show with Lubaina Himid which opens at Rochdale Art Gallery on the 25th of September 1987”

Supporting events: Sisters from Talawa Blackwoman’s Group / Reasoning on Sphinxx, Thursday 19 November at 7pm. Part 2 of Eye-Sis Sight-seers - 19th December
