Science Museum postcard of work by Chila Kumaru Burman. The image was titled RAISING THE ROOF! and was dated 2017. The work was an iPad painting. Text on the back of the card, as follows:
“Chila Kumari Burman has been commissioned by the Science Museum to produce these artworks as a response to the objects and stories that make up Illuminating India: 5000 Years of Science and Innovation. She has combined these with influences of traditional design and craft from south Asia and her own contemporary pop culture style. The rich array of materials used in the pieces are sourced from India, Sri Lanka and the UK.
Burman is a London-based artist who works in mixed media. She was born on Bootle, near Liverpool, the place her parents moved to when they left the Punjab in India. A prominent member of the Black British Art movement of the 1980s, Burman has explored politics, identity and representations of Asian women throughout her career. Her work is found in the collections of the British Council, Wellcome Trust, Victoria and Albert Museum and Tate.”
Born, 1958 in Liverpool, England
