Postcard for an exhibition by Denzil Forrester held at Jackson Foundation, a private gallery initiative developed by artist Kurt Jackson, located in St Just, Cornwall. This was a retrospective exhibition by Forrester, From Trench Town to Porthtowan, which took place May 26 - June 23 2018. Text (in part) on the back of the card, as follows:
“From Trench Town to Porthtowan captures scenes from artist Denzil Forrester’s life in Grenada, London and Cornwall. This large new exhibition at the Jackson Foundation is curated by Peter Doig and Matthew Higgs and is the first by an Invited Artist.
Forrester’s recent paintings focus on moments in his life in both Grenada and the UK. These include learning to read with his guardian Ma Pets in Hermitage [Grenada], and making bags in the 1970’s with his mother and siblings in Stoke Newington, London. These sit alongside earlier works from the 1980s, paintings made in direct response to the burgeoning dub reggae scene in London’s Afro-Caribbean communities.
“Denzil Forrester is one of the most important painters to come out of London in the early 80s and his work remains as vital and relevant today as it was then.” - Peter Doig, 2018
The remaining text related to exhibition times, etc. The image on the front of the card [a detail of Stitch Up, 2017, oil on canvas, 200 x 244 cm] was uncredited.
