Free postcard related to Yinka Shonibare MBE exhibition that took place at MCA Sydney, 2008 into 2009. Image featured: Un Bello in Maschera (A Masked Ball) still, 2004 high definition digital video. Reverse of postcard featured sponsor logos and other details.

Shonibare’s work referenced Un ballo in maschera (A Masked Ball), an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi with text by Antonio Somma. In turn Somma’s libretto was based on the five act libretto which playwright Eugène Scribe had written for Daniel Auber’s 1833 opera, Gustave III, ou Le bal masqué.

Shonibare visualises the 1792 assassination of Sweden’s King Gustav III, shot and eventually dying from injuries sustained while attending a masked ballroom dance.
