“Dealing creatively with cultural differences, the writer, filmmaker and composer Trinh T. Minh-ha is one of the major voices of postcolonial and postfeminist discourse of the 1980s and 1990s. Experiencing the heterogeneity of her own cultural background as a Vietnamese women who triangulated between an American way of life (she emigrated 1970), the Chinese revolution, French colonialization and teaching music in Senegal from 1977-80, the grafting of several cultures onto a single body is Trinh’s recurrent motif of hybridity. Her 16 mm film Naked Spaces-Living is Round (1985) experiments with a heightened awareness of sound, music, Cagean environmental noise, silence, abrupt camera movement, and sudden cuts to inaugurate the pleasure of seeing and the perception of a sensuality of place that is specific to each culture. By portraying her subjects from different positions and angles simultaneously, Trinh explores various ways of seeing and looking, always acknowledging the presence of the camera.”
