“Investigating transient social spaces of American sub-and counterculture, artist duo Steven Badgett and Matthew Lynch anchor their projects in the vernacular architecture of everyday life. Simparch’s ‘simple architecture’, a pun on SciArch (Southern California Institute of Architecture), promotes a design vision where form follows the need for better living as opposed to a capitalist urge for functionality, efficiency and cosmetic appearances. The ephemeral sensuality of their early projects draws upon a rich, culturally coded referentiality of outdated and recycled waste materials. Recent projects move into the communal dimension of sculptural production and have created heightened perceptual experiences through noise-scapes.”
