Doris Salcedo

Born, 1958 in Bogotá, Colombia.

From the archived Documenta 11 website : www.documenta12.de//archiv/d11/data/english/index.html

“Doris Salcedo was born in Colombia, a country torn for decades by the endless prosecutions of an old civil war gone astray and disfigured by the more modern realities of the production and traffic of drugs. For Salcedo, the territory of art is a fundamentally ethical space where the social memory of violence and the most perverse forms of alienation are played out. Nevertheless, her work does not neglect consideration for material and form. Through a series of sculptural processes, bits of old furniture, pathetic used shoes, remnants of clothes and bone fragments incrusted in an imposing chest or buried in the backrest of a chair mark of a memory so painful it is condemned to be forgotten.”
