“Photography superseded optometry as Osifuye’s primary professional concern in 1996. Since then he has created a body of work that speaks of the trials but also of the triumph of the human spirit in contemporary Nigeria. Although he comes off as a documentary photographer, he is more of a photo- essayist for his work is narrative but not in a straightforward way. He seeks to record the harsh realities of a society long-tethered to the battering post of military dictatorship and widespread economic hardships, his images eloquently suggest, without falling into visual clichés, a proud and resilient people, even if scarred by the failures of the postcolonial state (Faces of Poverty, 1999).”
