“It is silent in Juan Muñoz’ installations and yet sounds, music and conversations are important elements of his works. Although Muñoz was one of the first sculptors of his generation to return to figuration in the mid-1980s, the ideas of artistic and musical minimalism and concept art echo in his works. Like the ventriloquist’s puppet in his work The Wasteland (1986), the works of Muñoz tell stories nobody hears and point out that not everything can be spoken. With Gavin Bryars and John Berger, Muñoz set radio plays to music that deal with his passion for sleights of hand and images that are more easily heard. His last radio play, A Registered Patent: A Drummer Inside a Rotating Box (2001 - 2002), is based on his text Optical Illusion-Producing Box (A Drummer Inside a Rotating Box), US- patented instructions for a mechanical device with which the optical illusion of a drummer can alternately be produced and made to disappear.”
