“Starting out as a street photographer, Santu Mofokeng negotiates the charged genre of documentary photography, particularly bound to the negation and reconciliation of photojournalistic practice in the context of apartheid South Africa. Driven by his desire not to serve as an agent of ‘struggle’ reportage, Mofokeng recorded daily township life as a gesture of resistance. In the mid-1990s Mofokeng shifted his attention to landscape, seeking to negate the literal recording of apartheid referents and the typical lexicon of township living as spectacle. Photographing the Mouteleng cave portal during a Sangoma ritual ceremony and Zion Apolostic Church pilgrims, Mofokeng turned to this specific geographical locale in order to engage with a historically rooted relationship between land, representation, and cultural identity.”
