‘”… I found myself in a world that I had not determined. I decided to build a building next to this world, or actually, in this world: a self- portrait, in which fluctuating standstill dominated, and through which I would constantly be confronted with my choice, the one made up by Mark Manders.” Since 1986 Mark Manders has been working on this Self-Portrait as a Building, elements of which ”drawings, objects, sculptures, rooms, and writing” he regularly exhibits in different contexts. For Manders, dimensions and proportions are of elementary importance. Fragments of his Self-Portrait as a Building are reduced to 88 % of their actual size or transformed to other levels. Individual pieces seem to be from another world, a world of the subconscious; they seem to be references to a strange, yet always arranged order.’
