Chohreh Feyzdjou

Born, 1955 in Teheran, Iran

From the archived Documenta 11 website : www.documenta12.de//archiv/d11/data/english/index.html

“Chohreh Feyzdjou’s products are powerful relics which reveal and conceal, excavate and enclose a history deeply connected to their creator’s identity”—a Jewish woman born into a Muslim society who pursued an artistic career in Paris. Originating in her feeling of otherness and alienation, the lilac label “Products of Chohreh Feyzdjou,” stuck onto each of her objects, confronts this notion of difference, classifying them as integral parts of their creator and as autobiographical carriers trying to come to terms with their own history. The scrolls, mounted on scaffolds, conserved in glass jars, or wrapped in plastic, recount their past as Feyzdjou’s paintings and drawings in recycled form. Meticulously labeling and arranging all these objects in boxes, crates and other containers, Feyzdjou turns her works into an archive of her memory, trying to preserve what has been lost. It seems that, until her death, Feyzdjou was endlessly transforming and producing work in an attempt to confront a duality of life and death. More importantly, however, it became a means to deal with her own identity.”
