”Destiny Deacon gleefully deconstructs the race-based oppositions that once defined and delimited the visual production of aboriginal Australia. Deacon’s work is associated with the 1990s generation of “urban aboriginal” artists that call their work “Blak Art,” operating against the compulsory performance of cultural truth assigned to Australian indigenous artists in the popular national imagination. The video in her installation Forced into Images (2001) utilizes the theme of childish vision and playful self imaging, de-essentializing subjectivity and identity while un-masking a problematic cultural attitude to difference. The rendering of the self more prone to contextual slippage is underscored elsewhere in Deacon’s work through her use of second and third generation images, such as bubble jet prints from Polaroids and digital imaging.”
