Bernd & Hilla Becher

From the archived Documenta 11 website: www.documenta12.de//archiv/d11/data/english/index.html

“Bernhard Becher: born 1931 in Siegen, Germany, died June 22nd 2007 in Rostock; Hilla Becher: born 1934 in Potsdam, Germany. Lives in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Bernd and Hilla Becher have been working since 1959 on systematically classifying industrial buildings of the 19th and 20th centuries. They photograph them according to very strict, formal criteria and then arrange them as tableaux with respect to types. While the works follow the tradition of 19th century scientific picture atlases, the Bechers’ photographic documentation is instead concerned with conveying a conceptual artistic approach. Calling their works “anonymous sculptures,” the term refers more to their way of staging photographs as installations graced with objecthood than to the anonymity of the architects or to the sculptural forms of the architecture depicted.”
