Landscape architect Julie Bargmann and artist Stacy Levy’s collaborative project Testing the Waters regenerates an area affected by acid mine drainage (AMD) from the former coalmine No. Six in Vintondale, Pennsylvania. They have collaborated with scientists, historians, architects, and the local community to revitalize a toxic wasteland formerly denied both its ecological condition and historical identity. In 1995, Testing the Waters was launched to confront this post-industrial wasteland and transform it into a 40 acre “park” of treatment systems and carefully constructed landscapes which aim to echo and enhance the transformative processes employed.”
