From the article: “Although Ofili has continued to celebrate pattern and decoration in his art, over the past two years, he has gradually introduced into his paintings images drawn from the incongruous worlds of art history, comic strips, pornography, sport and music. In Ofili’s world, kitsch hangs out with sophistication, beauty plays with ugliness and the sacred clashes with the profane. His work swallows whole a diverse range of styles and influences: William Blake, Jean-Michael Basquiat, West African textiles, Matopos cave painting as well as Mohammad Ali, hip hop diva Lil’ Kim, Blaxploitation films and the sexual underworld of Kings Cross.”
