Elizabeth Catlett

Born, 1915 in Washington, D.C.. Died, 2012

Elizabeth Catlett’s 1973 bronze of the poet Phyllis Wheatly (1753 - 1784) was reproduced in the International Review of African American Art, Volume 8 Number 2, in the article. A Legacy of La Amistad | Some Twentieth Century Black Leaders, written by Clifton H. Johnson. Elsewhere in the issue were two more of Catlett’s pieces.

Elizabeth Catlett’s ‘Homage to the Panthers’, 1970 was reproduced in Keith Piper’s ‘Relocating the Remains’ catalogue, the main text of which was written by Kobena Mercer. The chapter in which Catlett’s work appears is ‘Art’s Histories and Culture’s Geographies: 1979 - 1985’.
